How To Carry Out A Skin Patch Test

We always recommend a patch test is carried out before any hair extension application to ensure the client does not react negatively to certain hair extensions particularly any with tape, bonds or adhesive.

The skin test is a simple 3 step procedure:

1) Apply a small amount of pre-bonded strands/adhesive or tape on a sensitive area of skin (usually behind the ear)
2) Place a bandage/plaster securely over the adhesive/tape/bond and send the customer home.
3) Ask them to remove the bandage/plaster after 48 hours and check for any reaction.

This procedure can also be used for micro-rings, as always we recommend a full consultation before any application to see if the client has any allergies or has had a previous allergic reaction to any metals, glue or adhesives.

If the client does have any irritation after 48 hours, we suggest not using the product on this customer. Its extremely important to make sure that the bandage did not become loose from the client’s skin during the test. If no irritation occurred and the plaster was secure, you are good to go and use the product with confidence.
