Hair Extension Length Guide: 14, 18, 20 & 22 Inch Extensions

Choosing the right hair extension length can make a huge difference to the finished result. Whether you're looking for subtle extra length, more volume or a dramatic transformation, it's worth considering how each length may look on you before ordering.

At HairXtensions.co.uk, many of our human hair extension ranges are available in 14, 18, 20 and 22 inch lengths. This guide explains the differences between them and how to choose an option that suits your natural hair, height, lifestyle and desired style.

Important: Hair extension length will not fall at exactly the same point on everybody. Your height, torso length, natural hair and the position where the extensions are fitted can all affect where the ends sit. Use the descriptions below as a guide rather than an exact measurement.

Hair Extension Length Comparison

Here's a quick overview of our main hair extension lengths before we look at each option in more detail.

Length Approx. CM Overall Look Ideal For Maintenance
14" 36cm Natural & subtle Volume and modest added length Lower
18" 46cm Medium-long Everyday length with versatility Moderate
20" 51cm Long & glamorous A noticeable transformation Moderate
22" 56cm Very long / statement Maximum length and dramatic styles Higher

How to Measure Hair Extension Length on Yourself

One of the easiest ways to decide between 14, 18, 20 and 22 inches is to use a tape measure before ordering.

1

Stand naturally in front of a mirror with your hair down.

2

Position the top of a flexible tape measure around the area where your extensions are likely to sit.

3

Measure down to 14, 18, 20 and 22 inches to see approximately where each length may finish on your body.

Tip: If possible, ask someone to help you measure from behind. This usually gives you a better idea of the finished length than trying to measure your own back.

14 Inch Hair Extensions

14 inch extensions are a great choice when you're looking for a more subtle change. They can add noticeable fullness and additional length without creating an extremely long hairstyle.

They're particularly useful for customers whose main goal is to add body, improve thickness or create a natural-looking transition from shorter or medium-length hair.

14 inch extensions can be ideal for:
  • Adding natural-looking volume
  • Creating a subtle increase in length
  • Customers who prefer shorter, easier-to-manage extensions
  • Blending with shorter or medium-length natural hair
  • Everyday hairstyles where extreme length isn't required

18 Inch Hair Extensions

18 inch extensions provide a noticeable increase in length while still remaining practical for everyday wear.

For many customers, 18 inches offers a good balance between length, versatility and manageability. It provides enough hair for a longer style without moving straight into the extra-long look of 20 or 22 inches.

18 inch extensions can be ideal for:
  • A noticeable but natural-looking transformation
  • Customers wanting medium-to-long hair
  • Everyday styling
  • Adding both length and volume
  • Curling, waves and longer hairstyles

20 Inch Hair Extensions

20 inch extensions are designed for customers who want their added length to be clearly noticeable.

They can create a longer, more glamorous finish and provide plenty of hair to work with when creating waves, curls, ponytails and other longer hairstyles.

Because the hair is longer, it's worth being prepared to spend a little more time brushing, detangling and caring for it than you might with a shorter length.

20 inch extensions can be ideal for:
  • A clearly noticeable increase in length
  • Long, glamorous hairstyles
  • Customers who regularly curl or style longer hair
  • Adding length and fullness together
  • Special occasions as well as everyday wear

22 Inch Hair Extensions

22 inch extensions are the longest standard length available across many of our main hair extension ranges and are designed for customers looking for a dramatic, extra-long finish.

This length can create a real statement and offers plenty of styling possibilities, but longer hair naturally requires more attention when brushing, washing, drying and sleeping.

22 inch extensions can be ideal for:
  • Customers specifically looking for very long hair
  • A dramatic transformation
  • Glamorous curls and waves
  • Creating a statement hairstyle
  • Customers comfortable with additional aftercare

Hair Extension Length vs Fullness

One important point that's often overlooked is that length and fullness are not the same thing.

Choosing 22 inch extensions gives you longer hair, but it doesn't automatically guarantee a fuller finished result. The amount of extension hair required will depend on your natural hair density, haircut, chosen fitting method and the result you're trying to achieve.

If Your Priority Is Volume

You may not need the longest option. A shorter extension that blends closely with your natural length can be an excellent way to add body, thickness and fullness.

If Your Priority Is Length

Longer extensions can provide a more dramatic transformation, but enough hair still needs to be used to create a balanced blend from your natural hair into the extension lengths.

Consider Your Natural Hair Length

Your current haircut and natural hair length should play an important part in your decision.

The greater the difference between your natural hair and your chosen extensions, the more important professional blending becomes. Someone with relatively short natural hair choosing 22 inch extensions may require more extension hair and additional blending than somebody whose natural hair is already long.

Very blunt haircuts can also be more noticeable against long extensions, so your extensionist may need to carefully distribute and blend the hair to create a softer transition.

Professionally fitted extensions: If you're planning a significant increase in length, we recommend having your natural hair assessed by a qualified hair extensionist before fitting.

Does Your Height Affect How Hair Extensions Look?

Yes. The same extension length can look quite different from person to person.

For example, 22 inch extensions will generally appear proportionally longer on someone with a shorter frame than on someone who is considerably taller. This is one reason we recommend measuring the desired length against your own body rather than relying solely on photographs of another person.

Which Hair Extension Length Is Easiest to Maintain?

As a general rule, shorter extensions can be quicker to brush, wash, dry and style. Longer lengths require a little more time and care simply because there's more hair to manage.

Before choosing 20 or 22 inches, consider whether you're comfortable with the additional brushing, drying and detangling involved.

Whichever length you choose, our Hair Extension Aftercare Guide contains detailed advice on washing, drying, brushing, sleeping and heat styling.

Does Hair Extension Method Affect the Length?

Your fitting method doesn't change the stated length of the extension hair, but it can affect how the extensions are positioned and distributed throughout your natural hair.

If you're still deciding between Nail-Tip, Stick-Tip, Nano-Tip, Micro-Loop, Tape-In, Wefts or Clip-Ins, read our Different Hair Extension Methods Guide before choosing.

Don't Forget Your Hair Extension Colour

Getting the length right is only part of creating a natural-looking result. Choosing a shade that blends closely with your own hair is equally important.

Still Unsure Which Hair Extension Length to Choose?

Measure the different lengths against your own body, think about how much maintenance you're comfortable with and consider whether your main goal is length, volume or a combination of both. If you're still unsure, our team will be happy to help with general product and colour questions.
